Robert Foley began his wine making career in the Napa Valley in 1977, working at a number of highly regarded Napa Valley wineries including the famous Pride Mountain Vineyards, where he spent 15 years as founding wine maker. During this period he also created the highy acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, School House, and Engel Family wines. Bob’s reputation for producing very expressive wines which finish gracefully continues to develop at the new winery facility on the summit of Napa County’s Howell Mountain.
The Griffin – the Foley family crest in Irish heraldry combines the
strengths of the lion, king of beasts, with the eagle, king of the skies
– is a fitting representation of our signature red blend. Bright red
and black fruit aromas reminiscent of Bing cherries and cassis pop from
the glass. The ample mid palate is framed in chewy yet fine tannins
which resolve nicely with flavors of black berry fruits. The
extraordinary balance of elements of mid-palate, acid and tannin
structure make for a versatile wine for pairing with an array of
cuisines. The 2012 Griffin is a blend of 47% Calistoga Merlot, 35%
Petite Sirah, 9% Charbono, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Petit Verdot. Wine Advocate states, "This
is something California needs to do more of – creative blends that are
loaded with personality and soul. This wine is part Rhone Ranger and
part classic Napa Cabernet."
